Upsetters Wins Solidarity Netball Tournament
Hartford, CT: Brooklyn-based Upsetters Netball Club came out on top in the Senior Division of the 18th Annual Netball tournament sponsored by the Solidarity Sports Club of Hartford, at the Weaver High School gym on Saturday, September 19.
Fifteen teams: Crusaders Sports Club, Islanders Sports Club, Manhattan International Netball Club, New Horizon Netball Club, Senators Sports Club, Sharecroppers Netball Club, Solidarity, St. Lucian Pittons, Typhoon Sports Club and the Volcanoes Sports Club, most out of New York, and one from Boston, participated in the tournament which was divided into two divisions, a Seniors and an Under-21.
Taking second place in the Seniors Division was another team out of Brooklyn, Volcanoes, while Crusaders from Queens, New York, held on for the third spot.
In the Seniors Division, the Most Valuable Player Award went to Lisa Brady of the Manhattan Club. Pat James of the Volcanoes A team won the award for the Most Outstanding Shooter, while Islanders also of New York was adjudged the Most Disciplined team.
Three teams participated in the Under-21 Division, which was won by Sunsplash Netball Club. Senators and Sharecroppers Club finished second and third respectively. Shavel Strehan of Sunsplash was named the Most Valuable Player.
According to the organizers, the appreciative crowd that showed up was treated to some closely fought and exciting contests throughout the tournament. They issued special thanks to the players, volunteers and officials, which included the umpires and time keepers, helped to make the event a success.
Sponsors for the event, which they hope to repeat next year, included Blue Hills Electric, Dynamic Electrical, Progressive Electric, and Scott’s Jamaican Bakery.
